An urban cable car for West Seattle

An alternative option for extending Sound Transit’s light rail system in West Seattle is the development of an urban cable car network. With an estimated construction cost of around 64 million euros per mile, the cable car system would be far less expensive than the proposed light rail extension, which could cost approximately 600 million euros per mile.

Desk Notes

An alternative option for extending Sound Transit’s light rail system in West Seattle is the development of an urban cable car network. With an estimated construction cost of around 64 million euros per mile, the cable car system would be far less expensive than the proposed light rail extension, which could cost approximately 600 million euros per mile.

Advantages of an Urban Cable Car System

One of the biggest benefits of an urban gondola system is that it requires much less land and infrastructure compared with traditional rail projects. Cable cars can be built in areas with limited space while also creating less noise pollution for surrounding neighborhoods.

Another advantage is the potential construction timeline. The ropeway project could potentially begin as early as 2022 or 2023, allowing it to become operational sooner than the planned light rail expansion. This faster implementation has attracted interest from many residents and supporters of the proposal.

Growing Support for West Seattle SkyLink

Although urban cable cars have not yet become common in North American cities, Martin Pagel, one of the founders of West Seattle SkyLink, believes this transportation method has strong potential to gain wider acceptance in the future.

A group of committed West Seattle community advocates has been promoting the cable car concept in hopes of gaining recognition from regional transportation officials and members of Sound Transit’s board.

A Sustainable Transportation Alternative

Supporters of the project hope the proposal can encourage decision-makers to reconsider the current light rail plan and explore urban gondola technology as a practical alternative.

They believe a cable car system could help reduce increasing traffic congestion in West Seattle while providing a cleaner and more sustainable transportation solution for the community. By combining efficiency, affordability, and environmental benefits, the proposed urban cable car could become an important part of the region’s future mobility network.

I understand that heights can be frightening for many people, but I rarely turn down an opportunity to stand on a mountain summit or travel to the upper levels of a skyscraper. Over the years, I have visited a number of man-made structures around the world that have held the distinction of being the tallest buildings on Earth. So when a family trip recently brought us to Dubai, I knew that seeing the Burj Khalifa would be one of the experiences we could not leave off our “Must Do” list.
